Let our resident nature journaling kid, Raybonto, show you how he does it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Nature Journaling Kid: The Nature Journal Show With Raybonto\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ipo21sfKJz8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, Marley set out to answer the question: Who is Raybonto?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>When Marley sat down to interview him, Raybonto was quick to show him his recent pages. \u00a0First was a<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0field sketch of a tree: he wrote down and labeled the colors he saw, drew himself into the picture, and then estimated in feet the height of the tree. He also did a blind contour, something he says he almost never does in his nature journal, and then he followed up with a values sketch. \u00a0Check out Marley&#8217;s interview with Amaya <a href=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/the-nature-journal-show\/nature-journal-homeschool-interview-with-amaya\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raybonto fills the whole page<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>One thing that stands out about Raybonto is the way he uses the space of each page. \u00a0Recently John Muir Laws had taught a class on botany, so Raybonto showed Marley his notes. \u00a0There were<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0at least 20 individual sketches over the two-page spread, as well as color swatches in every available space.\u00a0 When Raybonto draws, he doesn\u2019t get tied down <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to any one drawing; instead he fills his pages completely, drawing a subject multiple times, from different angles, sometimes using different media with each sketch.\u00a0 He keeps two main sketchbooks: a practice sketchbook, and a field journal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2317 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Nature journaling kid Raybonto's page of snakes\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Snake-heads-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has also been experimenting with toned paper, using both colored pencils and watercolor.\u00a0 That brings his total of active sketchbooks to three.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raybonto is not afraid to experiment<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before his current notebooks, Raybonto had previously been using a watercolor pad as well, though he found he was not able to be as diverse with his media on it.\u00a0 He felt he had to always include watercolor on the paper, so changing to a different journal allowed him to use whatever media best suited him at any particular time. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He experiments with any and all media he can get his hands, whether it&#8217;s\u00a0regular paper, toned paper, colored pencils, watercolors, or a 12B graphite pencil &#8211; his current favorite. \u00a0By experimenting with so many different media, Raybonto all but guarantees he would be able to pick up almost any tool and be able to nature journal with it. \u00a0This only adds to his resiliency as a nature journal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2319 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"nature journal kid Raybonto draws horses\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Horse-gaits-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raybonto nature journals every single day<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For many of us, nature journaling every day might be a goal set too high.\u00a0 We have other obligations in our lives, and it might feel impossible to squeeze time in for time in nature.\u00a0 There is no need to beat ourselves up for this.\u00a0 At the same time, it is more than OK to let Raybonto inspire us.
