Find out from <strong>Paula Peeters<\/strong>, a nature journaler, teacher, writer, scientist, and conservationist from Australia. \u00a0In this episode of the Nature Journal Show, Marley interviews Paula about her books, different ways of describing a place, the ideal nature journal outing, resources for Aussie nature journalers, and what makes nature journaling Australia so special.<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8R6tMRN_Tw4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>How do you describe a place?<\/h4>\n<p>If you&#8217;re Paula Peeters, you use a diversity of different ways to describe a place. \u00a0Sometimes she goes for in-depth drawings that focus on details and take time to complete. \u00a0Other times, Paula might opt for a cartoon &#8211; it&#8217;s easier to capture details quickly when you&#8217;re cartooning. \u00a0Both approaches are very useful, depending on what Paula is after in her nature journaling session.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2522\" style=\"width: 932px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2522 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters5.png\" alt=\"Paula birds cartoon\" width=\"932\" height=\"964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters5.png 932w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters5-290x300.png 290w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters5-768x794.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here, Paula uses a cartoon approach so she can capture the diversity of birds she sees quickly. This helps her draw multiple birds and take down more information than if she had focused on getting one perfect in-depth drawing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A particularly ingenious way of describing the complexity of a place is with a &#8220;folding forest&#8221; &#8211; Paula creates pages with lifting flaps and expanding backgrounds, so you can see what&#8217;s going on in the skies above and the earth below a particular ecosystem. \u00a0Using such a variety of ways to show information can help deepen your understanding of that place, as well as the nature journaling experience itself.<\/p>\n<p>To help other people engage in the places she cares about, Paula also writes books. \u00a0Some are books to help people get outside more, such as\u00a0<em>Take This Book for a Walk\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Make a Date With Nature.<\/em>\u00a0Others are coloring books of different habitats and the species living in them &#8211; some of which are threatened. \u00a0By allowing the reader\/colorer to go on an adventure in her books, Paula gives them an emotional investment into the wellbeing of these places.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2523\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2523 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3-938x1024.png\" alt=\"Paula folding forest\" width=\"840\" height=\"917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3-938x1024.png 938w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3-275x300.png 275w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3-768x839.png 768w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3-1200x1311.png 1200w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters3.png 1344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paula makes flaps that lift so she can choose information to hide and reveal &#8211; a playful way of nature journaling as well as interactive for the reader.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>What is different about the nature journaling experience in Australia?<\/h4>\n<p>Nature journal clubs have been growing all over Australia. \u00a0Marley asks Paula why she thinks Australia is nature journaling so much. \u00a0Here are three possible factors, according to Paula:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In Australia, <strong>you can go outside most of the year.<\/strong> \u00a0The winters are not so severe &#8211; there is seldom snow, for example.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is extraordinary nature in Australia.<\/strong> \u00a0The trees are largely evergreen &#8211; there are over 800 different species of Eucalyptus alone! &#8211; and there is a diversity of certain animals you would not be able to find anywhere else in the world. \u00a0Paula is quick to point out that there are not huge predatory animals, unlike in North America &#8211; though Australia <em>is<\/em> home to many poisonous and venomous animals!<\/li>\n<li>Related to the last point: <strong>there are large parts of Australia that are still unchanged<\/strong> from when the European settlers first came, about 200 years ago. \u00a0This means that there might be intact ecosystems and wild spaces, places to explore in an increasingly urbanized world.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2521\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2521 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Paula tree drawing\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1-1200x1200.png 1200w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PaulaPeeters1.png 1404w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this drawing, Paula takes time to add lots of details such as texture and shadows to make the tree come alive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Adding to INIWIRMO<\/h4>\n<p>One of the core tools in nature journaling is observation, and there is a commonly used three-pronged prompt that can help facilitate that process: &#8220;<strong>I N<\/strong>otice&#8221;, &#8220;<strong>I W<\/strong>onder&#8221;, and &#8220;<strong>I<\/strong>t <strong>R<\/strong>eminds <strong>M<\/strong>e <strong>O<\/strong>f&#8221;, or INIWIRMO for short. \u00a0Paula adds one more prompt when she is sharing this activity with her students: &#8220;How does it (make me) feel?&#8221; \u00a0(So would that be INIWIRMOHDIF?) \u00a0Anyone can follow these prompts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First, <strong>write down what you notice in the environment around you.<\/strong> \u00a0This can be things to do with the 5 senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste), or the different species you see, or different behaviors you observe, or other things that are around you. \u00a0Caution: try to refrain from making assumptions about what you&#8217;re seeing. \u00a0You might observe<\/li>\n<li>Next, <strong>write down questions that came up for you while you were observing the environment.<\/strong> \u00a0You can write down question chains, where one inquiry leads to another, which leads to more. \u00a0You don&#8217;t have to actually answer any of these questions! \u00a0For now, let the curiosity flow.<\/li>\n<li>Then, <strong>write down any connections you&#8217;ve made.<\/strong> \u00a0Perhaps you&#8217;re watching an eddy in a river, and it reminds you of water going down the drain in your bathtub &#8211; write that down! \u00a0Regularly making connections between seemingly unrelated things improves our creativity and changes our thinking. \u00a0Plus, by making a comparison of something you see in nature to something that is very familiar to you, you will remember it better, and it might just give you more questions AND more answers!<\/li>\n<li>Finally, <strong>write down how you&#8217;re feeling about what you&#8217;ve been experiencing so far.<\/strong> \u00a0When we connect to things personally, we remember them better; so remembering how something personally made us feel then attaches an emotion to that experience. \u00a0Paula strongly believes (and we agree!) that nature journaling can promote health and wellness. \u00a0And by caring for ourselves in nature, we can also learn to care for nature.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are so many lessons we can learn from Paula!
