previously she studied d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evelopmental and evolutionary biology. \u00a0Though she had never experienced wildfire directly before, she wanted to see the rapid changes wildfire causes. \u00a0She chose to begin visiting Stebbins Cold Canyon <strong>at least once a month<\/strong> because it is close to where she lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stebbins Cold Canyon has burned twice in recent years &#8211; once in 2015, and again in 2020. \u00a0At the end of the 5 year gap and just before the second burn, Robin had noticed that things had begun to slow down in terns of ecosystem change, though change never really stops. \u00a0Robin notes that even &#8220;staying the same&#8221; requires an active process:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThings have to work to stay the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2581 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"Robin Carlson journal spread\" width=\"840\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1-768x459.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1-1200x718.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson1.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What kinds of tools do we use When nature journaling ecosystem change?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of physical tools, Robin\u2019s preferred supplies are her Kuretake brush pen (with permanent black ink) and Pentel brush pen (with permanent grey ink) to use for shadows. \u00a0She finds them useful for both quick sketches and for building more complex illustrations. \u00a0Robin has a strong belief that the\u00a0initial sketch she makes is the most important, because it has the rawest and most complete impressions in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In terms of mental tools, it comes down to observation skills, consistency, and &#8211; adding those two together &#8211; experience.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robin&#8217;s goal was (and still is) to get to know a specific place &#8211; to get to know the plants, animals, fungi who grow there on a deeper level. \u00a0<\/span>As such, when she began her longterm exploration, her questions were a lot more general:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat does it look like?\u00a0 What questions does this generate?\u00a0 What am I seeing?\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her questions became more targeted over time; now she notices which trees might have died or which have been regrowing, and where the regrowth has been happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2582 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson2.jpg\" alt=\"Robin Carlson journal2\" width=\"720\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/RobinCarlson2-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>What changes and what stays the same?<\/h4>\n<p>Robin has noticed that green regrowth comes up almost immediately after a wildfire. \u00a0This leads her to believe there must be\u00a0a LOT more water in the ecosystem than it would appear, even during summer droughts. \u00a0Perhaps there are water sources hidden in the burls, in the roots, stored in the materials of the plants both above and below ground, and deeper in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>The creek had just enough water in it that it did not burn, and this was readily apparent by the flowers that continued to bloom there. \u00a0The hummingbirds in particular were quite happy. \u00a0Speaking of flowers, in other parts of the canyon, Robin noticed a species called &#8220;whispering bells&#8221;. \u00a0To Robin&#8217;s knowledge, this wildflower had not bloomed in those parts in over 30 years. \u00a0Perhaps the seeds had lain dormant in the seedbank until the fires activated them, or perhaps it was some other process that led to their resurgence.<\/p>\n<p>An onsite sign and a donation collections jar stayed the same and did not burn away, though the sign needed a new post.<\/p>\n<p>Some trees died and stayed dead, while others resprouted from the most unlikeliest of places. \u00a0Bees returned.<\/p>\n<p>You might imagine it would get boring to return to the same place again and again &#8211;
