Have you ever compared two things in your nature journal?<\/p>\n

Today’s Prompt: Leaf comparison<\/h2>\n

John Muir Laws, myself, and other teachers talk frequently about the technique called “Joint Comparison.” In this technique you compare two things side by side in your nature journal. By doing this you can observe much more. Studies of the human brain and perception have shown we can pick up much more when comparing two things. Perhaps you have nature journaled leaves before. It is a powerful, fascinating, and ubiquitous part of nature. Today, we will combine the benefits of nature journaling a leaf with the next level technique of joint comparison.<\/p>\n

How to do\u00a0 a leaf comparison:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. First, choose two leaves. It is actually good if they are pretty similar. The more similar they are the deeper your observation will have to go to notice differences.<\/li>\n
  2. Next, try to think about your page layout at least a little. The way you organize your page can help or hinder the comparison of two things. Think of a parallel composition. Think of promotional poster for a boxing match with one person on each side.<\/li>\n
  3. Start comparing and contrasting your two leaves.<\/li>\n
  4. Try to use all three nature journaling languages. Words, numbers, and images all can play a role.<\/li>\n
  5. Need help with the numbers? Try measuring something on your leaves, counting veins or holes.<\/li>\n
  6. Don’t forget drawing is a tool for learning too. Your drawings don’t have to be photo-realistic or Picassos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You will never look at leaves the same again…<\/h4>\n

    We often take for granted leaves and other aspects of our environment. The things all around us lose their wonder once we are no longer children. Nature journaling is a tool that helps us regain that sense of wonder by seeing the world in new ways. We can dive deep into the fascinating world of leaves (even “boring” ones) because nature journaling gives us new eyes.<\/p>\n
