This high altitude ecosystem is lacking in trees but makes up for it with lots of weird plants, the world&#8217;s biggest hummingbird, and South America&#8217;s spectacled bear! This unique type of ecosystem can be compared in some ways to tundra or moorlands in temperate climates but instead the P\u00e1ramo only occurs in South America and Central America. It occurs between the permanent snowline and the treeline. Some of the most well known plants are giant members of the sunflower family such as fraillejon, the bizarre cushion plants, including some in the carrot family, and many members of the blueberry family and the pineapple family. There are also tons of weird mosses, lichens, liverworts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lycopodiopsida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lycopods<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3>Why the P\u00e1ramo matters?<\/h3>\n<p>This ecosystem plays several vital ecosystem roles including hydrology, carbon sequestration, and<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C3%A1ramo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a reservoir for endemic biodiversity<\/a>. Due to the soil types and plants community of the Par\u00e1mo there is a capacity to absorb massive amounts of water and release it slowly. This is vital to the water security of many of downhill cities and settlements including some of the most populous cities in the Andes. Additionally, this treeless ecosystem actually sequesters a large amount of carbon. This may be in part due to the slow decomposition or organic matter. Finally, the Paramo is a hot spot for biodiversity and endemism. Photo by Nancy Miorelli.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Tips for Nature Journaling in the P\u00e1ramo<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some of my tips for nature journaling in this fascinating environment. I have included some product links that I have personally tested. Some are affiliate links so I get a small percentage if you use them.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go with someone who knows the area.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t eat the death blueberries.<\/li>\n<li>Wear layers. It&#8217;s cold up here. I wore a merino <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4fam3P8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wool base layer like this<\/a> everyday because it&#8217;s warm comfy and doesn&#8217;t smell bad after 4 days of use. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/product\/womens-nano-puff-insulated-jacket\/84217.html?dwvar_84217_color=BLK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patagonia Nano-Puff Jacket<\/a> is also super useful! Sometimes, you can find them used <a href=\"https:\/\/wornwear.patagonia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared for sun, wind, or rain.<\/li>\n<li>Stay hydrated. Even if it is cold. I like <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LzVcyp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using these electrolytes<\/a>. I often carry the ones with caffeine in my nature journal kit.<\/li>\n<li>Try these nature journaling techniques: <a href=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/the-nature-journal-show\/how-to-nature-journal-a-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collections<\/a>, elevation diagram, <a href=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/nature-journal-community\/leaf-comparison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint comparison<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t sit or kneel on the plants. Everything up here is like a sponge and will soak you.<\/li>\n<li>Retreat to the hot springs!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Andes to Amazon Nature Journaling Adventure<\/h2>\n<p>Did you say hot springs? Why yes I did. After a long day of nature journaling in the cold and windy P\u00e1ramo it can be really nice to soak in a beautiful hot spring in Papallacta. And that is exactly what we did on the Andes to Amazon nature journaling adventure! The resort where we stayed had amazing hot spring pools surrounded by beautiful plants and epic views of the mountains. I even did some nature journaling while soaking and saw cool birds from the comfort of the pools!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_9866.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4284\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_9866.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_9866.jpeg 1440w, https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_9866-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The whole point of the Andes to Amazon Nature Journaling Adventure was to explore the diversity of ecosystems available in Ecuador starting in the Andes and descending to the Amazon. The P\u00e1ramo was perhaps one of the most challenging but also the most rewarding. After all, how often do you get to nature journal inside a Dr Seuss illustration? Below, you can see where the P\u00e1ramo is located in relationship to the other ecosystems we visited on this trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0053.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4286\" src=\"https:\/\/marleypeifer.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0053.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1450\" height=\"744\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What do spectacled bears, death blueberries, turquoise-flowered bromeliads, cushion plants, and giant hummingbirds all have in common?
