Nature Journaling Cactus in Balboa Park

Want to have fun sketching and nature journaling while learning about cactus? Join this  nature journaling field trip and learn some of the basics of drawing plants from observation while also practicing your creativity and nature observation.

Aloes and hummingbirds are not cactus

About your teacher:

Marley has been teaching nature journaling for over ten years, he has studied and worked with plants for most of his life and Cactaceae is one of his favorite families! He likes the word “succulent” as an adjective but not as a noun. He also rarely resists pointing out that not all plants with spines are cacti, not all cacti have spines and just because it looks like a cactus doesn’t mean it grows with no water. Learn these finer points of cactus botany and more on this outing. More importantly learn how to make your own direct observations and improve your drawing as a learning tool.

Location: Balboa Park Cactus and Rose Garden. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.

$20 Suggested Donation but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Time: 10am-1pm with potluck Bring: Layers, hat, water, nature journaling or sketching supplies, portable chair if you want, potluck goodie to share and utensils and plate to eat your own food with. We will be wandering around and sketching so bring whatever you need to feel comfortable and ready outdoors. Family Friendly: Humans learn well in multi-age groups, especially in nature. If you have children that can pay attention with a group of adults and are self sufficient please bring them. The workshop is mostly intended for adults but we will adapt to the group we have. There are lots of spiny friends at this location that are good at teaching about boundaries.
