SUMMARY:Elk Adventure!
DESCRIPTION:In September\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will pass through the mists of time and go back to the Pleistocene! We will stand spellbound with our journals watching 500 pound tule elk thrashing coyote brush with their giant antlers and listening to the otherworldly bugling of more elk in the distance. We will be surrounded by biodiverse coastal prairie\, a vast view of the ocean\, and scenic coves and cliffs. All of this only a few hours drive from San Francisco. The elk will be on their most dramatic rutting behavior this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. We have also seen coyotes lounging\, bobcats patrolling\,  harrier hawk fly-bys\, and cruising peregrines. For the instruction aspect we will focus on learning how to draw ungulates\, how to draw antlers\, and how to creatively depict action sequences in our journals. There will also be plenty of opportunity for painting landscape sketches. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. This location is not scooter friendly. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the Tomales Point trailhead parking lot at the very end of pierce point road near the old white barns. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \nBe prepared for Nature Journaling goosebumps and a good dose of charismatic mammalian megafauna! \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Class at Pepperwood Preserve
DESCRIPTION:I’m excited to be doing my first collaboration with the Pepperwood Preserve this year! On August 24th I will be teaching “Seeing More Through Nature Journaling” at their incredible 3\,200 acre property. I went to a reptile walk there a couple months ago so I could nature journal and scope the place out. The vistas were impressive and fun to draw and I got in quick sketches of a blue-tailed skink\, a pileated woodpecker\, and a scorpion! \nThere are only a few people signed up for the class right now and if more don’t sign up we might have to cancel. If you know anyone who is interested please share with them. \nThe class is from 9am until 2pm. Bring nature journaling supplies such as sketchbook\, pencil\, watercolors if you have them and a backback or shoulder bag to carry them. Binoculars and small folding stools could also be useful. Be prepared for sun and heat by wearing a hat\, applying sunscreen and bringing water. We will be walking less than a mile on relatively even hiking trails with some hills.Bring a lunch to eat on the trail. \nFor more information or to register click here \n

SUMMARY:Enjoy and Journal at Heart's Desire Beach!
DESCRIPTION:In August\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club is in for a treat! We are going to escape the heat but still get outside at Heart’s Desire Beach in Tomales Bay State Park! This gorgeous and sheltered beach is nestled between a biodiverse forest and the scenic Tomales Bay. In addition to endless botanical subjects to investigate we will have expansive vistas waiting to be painted. \nWe will focus on techniques for cultivating curiosity and organizing information on the page. We will also have ample opportunities to practice landscapitos in an incredible setting. \nThe temperature will be relatively mild but we will be in and out of the sun and despite the protected location wind will probably pick up as the day progresses. Hats will be useful and comfortable layered clothing is essential.  Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. We will go for a short walk on fairly even dirt trails and some sand and end up at some picnic tables. Scooters can be accommodated but wheelchairs will probably not be able to work. \nFor more information about the location: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=470 \nWe will meet at 9 am in the parking lot. (earlier than our usual start time) Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Bring a potluck item to share for lunch around 12:30. Bring food that you can carry with you on the trail. \n$8 parking fee at this location \n$20 suggested donation. \nThis class is limited to 12 people. Please email me to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Learn to Nature Journal at the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens!
DESCRIPTION:  \nI’m super excited to be collaborating with the biodiverse pollinator sanctuary Hallberg Butterfly Gardens! We will be offering an introduction to nature journaling course at their site in Sebastopol. Insects and pollinators are not only fascinating to study and draw but they play a huge part in our ecosystems and have been seriously endangered in recent years. As nature journalers\, our observations can play an important role in citizen science and creating a record of these species in our areas. \nSupplies will be included!  The class is offered at a sliding scale. $45 minimum to register. Please use the ticket link or contact us to sign up. info@hallbergbutterflygardens.org (707)823-3420 \n

SUMMARY:Pitcher Plant Bonanza!
DESCRIPTION:In June\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club is privileged to enjoy the peak of the pitcher plants at California Carnivores in Sonoma County! This nursery contains the largest collection of carnivorous plants in the world and June will be a perfect time to see the amazing species of pitcher plants at their best! If you think you have already nature journaled once at this location and don’t need to go twice – think again.  We will focus on drawing and learning about carnivorous plants in general and Sarracenia pitcher plants in particular. We will also practice composition strategies and tips for nature journaling in information dense environments. \nThe weather will be relatively mild and probably comfortable inside the greenhouses. Hats will be useful if it is sunny. We will not be walking much but the floor is uneven and made of gravel\, scooters or wheelchairs can be accommodated. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Bring a potluck item to share for lunch around 12:30. You can leave food in your car. \n$20 suggested donation. \nThis class is limited to 12 people. Please email me to reserve your spot. \nAs usual be prepared to get super-curious in nature and connect with like minded people! \nHere is a picture of Akshay nature journaling surrounded by pitchers last year!

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Full Bloom!
DESCRIPTION:In April\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will have the special opportunity to spend the day in a flower-filled apple orchard. We will enjoy the beauty of the blossoms\, practice drawing the 100 year old trees\, and learn about the endangered Gravenstein apple and how biodiversity is connected to our food system. We will also have a good opportunity to learn about the pollinators and other animals that call these orchards home. \nFor the lesson portion of the field trip we will talk about techniques for drawing trees and tricks for depicting numerous repeating patterns such as flowers or leaves. We will also discuss how to divide space on your page to create a better composition. As usual\, we will practice intentional curiosity\, visual thinking\, and careful observation in a supportive community setting. \nWe will not be hiking long distances on this trip but the ground will be uneven. Wear layered clothing and be prepared for either sun and warmth or cool breezy conditions. Scooters or wheelchairs can be accommodated at this location. \nThis wonderful opportunity is made possible by our nature journaling friend Carole who has offered us the use of her orchard for this event. Please be respectful while we are on the property. Carole has been kind enough to allow us to use her bathroom while we are there. \nWe will enjoy a very scenic Potluck lunch around 12:30. We won’t need to hike with our food because we will be eating near the cars. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.
