SUMMARY:Nature Journal Beach Vacation
DESCRIPTION:Nature Journal Beach Vacation: Costa Rica\nAre you ready to relax into the beauty of a Costa Rican sunset while unlocking your creativity? Do you want to rejuvenate your winter season with a week of nature journaling and relaxing on a tropical beach? Do you want to take a break for yourself between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Join Marley and a select group of nature journalers for a week long stay at one of the premiere beach-side hotels in Costa Rica. We will focus our nature journals on landscapes\, tidepools\, plants and if we are lucky sea turtles. Watercolor landscapes and botanical illustrations will be delved into with more depth. \nWho Should Come: This trip is perfect for anyone from a cold climate that wants to revitalize their nature journaling and their body and soul with the warmth and vibrancy of the tropics. Anyone who wants to combine tropical beach-side relaxation and art will benefit from this trip. We will have daily classes and one-on-one lessons with Marley but there will also be plenty of time to relax or explore on your own. No long hikes or extreme adventures on this trip (see the Andes to Amazon trip for that). Cocktails and painting the sunset with your feet in the sand every evening is more like it 😉 \nWhen: 3rd of December to 10th December. \nWhere: The idyllic Northwest Coast of Costa Rica. See more about the hotel here. \nHow Much: $1750 (price may vary slightly depending on group size and if you choose double or single rooms.) Cost covers tuition\, 7 nights at the hotel\, all meals\, and shuttle to and from the airport. \nReserve your spot: by depositing $450 to Marley (marley339@gmail.com) on Paypal by August 5th. If for some reason we can not get enough people by August 5th I will refund the deposits. \nNEW! Click to see the itinerary here. \nNEW! More about flights here. \nDownload and print Costa Rica trip agreements \nOther Details: All participants must have their own travel insurance that covers evacuation. This is just a safeguard in a post-covid world. This trip is very safe and Costa Rica is safer than most places I have lived in the USA. \nStay tuned for more information about this Nature Journal Beach Vacation!!! \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling San Diego: Balboa Park Desert Garden
DESCRIPTION:Nature journaling San Diego? Come learn the basics and practice with other nature journalers in Balboa Park. We will go to the desert garden across from the San Diego Zoo and Natural History Museum where we can sketch\, watercolor\, and enjoy the diversity of cool plants and even animals. Marley will teach nature journaling techniques and explain some basic botany. You can meet other sketchers and nature journalers from the area and help grow nature journaling San Diego. \nParking is available along Park Blvd and across the street at the Natural History Museum Parking Lot. We will meet where the footbridge crosses Park Blvd on the Cactus and Rose Garden side. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. \nAccess and Mobility: We will stick mostly to paved cement walkways. The foot bridge that crosses Park Blvd is kind of steep but it is smooth. Scooters or mobility chairs should be fine. If you are in a wheelchair I can help push you if needed. There are paths on decomposed granite that meander through the plants. These paths may be suitable for some people but we will mostly stick to the paved ones. There are benches in good locations. There are some shade options but it is mostly sunny. The only bathrooms are across the street at Balboa Park. \nBring: Comfortable clothes\, hat\, sunglasses\, and shoes for outdoors\, water and a snack. Basic nature journaling supplies in a easy to carry bag. \nThere is a $20 suggested donation. This money goes directly to helping Marley spread the benefits of nature journaling in San Diego and beyond! \n \n \nTotally new to nature journaling? Click here to read this for beginner nature journaling tips.\nIn conclusion\, let me show you some of the amazing plants I saw on a recent visit. \nFirst\, look at this amazing cactus flower situation. Incredibly\, this is a plant despite the fact that is looks extraterrestrial. How would you nature journal this?\nNext\, look at this cute cactus. The flowers are surprisingly bright in contrast to the rest of it.\nLast but not least look at this Opuntia blossom. Opuntia is a genus of cactus with many species. For example prickly pears and nopalitos are in this genus. In fact\, there are actually several native species of Opuntia in San Diego County. You can learn more about the cactus species of San Diego here: https://www.inaturalist.org/check_lists/69659-Cactaceae-of-San-Diego-County–CA–US

Now is your chance to experience this calming environment while capturing it in your nature journal because on March 8th I will be leading a field trip to Landpath’s Grove of Old Trees in Occidental!  This preserve is a a secret gem in West Sonoma County and has a calming effect on all who visit. \nRSVP  is required for this special class limited to 15 people. Wear layers.  We will not be walking much but the the trails are wide\, easy\, and many of them are wheelchair or scooter accessible. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one that you like\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is no bathroom on site. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Potluck lunch around 12:30. \nBe prepared for the calming effect of the old growth forest shared with like-minded people in a beautiful setting. If rain is in the forecast I will contact you about backup plans. \nRSVP  is required for this special class limited to 15 people. Please contact me directly at marley339 at gmail.com. If you have not communicated with me directly you are not registered for this class. \n$20 suggested donation. SUMMARY:Nature Journal Weird Carnivorous Plants!
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to escape the cold and the rain to go on a nature journaling vacation to a tropical rain forest in February? You are in luck because on February 9th I will be leading a nature journaling field trip inside the bio-diverse greenhouses at California Carnivores in Sebastopol! This local business contains arguably the biggest collection of carnivorous plants in the world. Not only are these plants fascinating to study and beautiful to draw but many of them are also endangered. They also have many orchids\, bromeliads\, liverworts\, and mosses. \nRSVP  is required for this special class limited to 15 people. Please contact me directly at marley339 at gmail.com \nIn this class I will teach topics including: how to quickly capture the essence of complex shapes in our drawings\, how to draw things we are intimidated by\, and how to nature journal in visually overwhelming or information-dense settings. \nThe weather will be relatively mild\, humid\, and warm inside the greenhouses. Hats will be useful if it is sunny. We will not be walking much but the floor is uneven and made of gravel. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one that you like\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. Unfortunately\, this site is not wheelchair or scooter friendly. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Potluck lunch around 12:30. \nBe prepared for mind-boggling plant forms and colors as well as a good dose of novelty-induced dopamine! \nRSVP  is required for this special class limited to 15 people. Please contact me directly at marley339 at gmail.com \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Nature Journal and Sketch at Balboa Park!
DESCRIPTION:On December 21st I will be leading a completely FREE field trip at the world famous Balboa Park in San Diego! We will start at the Lily Pond and Botanical Building and sketch and botanize our way past the giant fig tree to the Desert garden on the other side of Park Avenue. \nThe goal of this field trip will be to bring together some of the sketchers and nature journalers that are in San Diego and have fun together in a beautiful place! We will mostly be looking at plants but be prepared for our curiosity and luck to lead us to pretty birds or bugs. For the instructional portion of the class I will give tips on designing attractive page layouts\, keys to drawing trees\, and drawing little landscapes. \nWe will meet at 10am at the Lily Pond. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. Hold your sketchbook so that others will recognize you. Bring a hat\, sunscreen\, field sketching supplies\, binoculars\, plenty of water and a potluck item to share. Potluck will be at 12:30 near the fig tree in front of the Natural History Museum. \nOur basic route for the day. \n \nThe best place to park is probably near the natural history museum. From there you can walk to the Lily Pond. This trip is scooter and wheelchair friendly\, we will not hike long distances. It will probably be a crowded time of year so there will be a lot of people. As usual be prepared for stimulating your curiosity\, sharpening your artistic skills\, and having fun with like-minded people!

SUMMARY:Special Access Bug Museum!
DESCRIPTION:On of my favorite places to nature journal during the winter is at the Bohart Museum of Entomology at the University of California Davis. Once again a select handful of nature journalers will be allowed access to this extraordinary collection thanks to JP Panter and Tabatha. JP has arranged with Bohart staff to have a special day for us to visit. There will be one PHD entomologist helping us\, accessing specimens for us to draw\, and answering questions. They also have some incredible live specimens that we can look at. This is a very special experience and there are only 5 spots left. Email me directly to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Tracking and Journaling Elk!
DESCRIPTION:In November\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will go back to Tomales Point for a second chance to see the elk during the tail end of their breeding season! We will have an opportunity to apply some of the tracking skills that we learned in  the last class to the habitat of these 200-500 pound ungulates.  Throughout the trip we will be surrounded by biodiverse coastal prairie\, a vast view of the ocean\, and scenic coves and cliffs. Can you believe this is available within a few hours drive from San Francisco? We have also seen coyotes lounging\, bobcats patrolling\,  harrier hawk fly-bys\, and cruising peregrines\, in addition to fascinating wildflowers and native bees. For the instruction aspect we will focus on how to apply a tracking perspective to add another layer of insight into your nature journaling. There will also be instruction on how to create compelling landscape sketches so be sure to bring your watercolors if you have them. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so wear layers and be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. This location is not scooter friendly. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the Tomales Point trailhead parking lot at the very end of pierce point road near the old white barns. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. Check this site the evening before the trip for weather updates. Our rainy day plan is to go to the Bear Valley Visitor center in Point Reyes where there are wonderful displays and covered areas to nature journal. \nThis trip is limited to 15 people. Email or message me directly to save your spot. Marley339 at gmail.com \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Endangered Tidal Marsh
DESCRIPTION:For October\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be visiting the critically endangered and often overlooked tidal marshes of the San Pablo Bay\, enjoying the beauty and using our journaling as a tool for citizen science. Ninety five percent of this ecosystem has been lost in the Bay Area despite the fact that it provides critical ecological services that directly affect our standard of living and survival. We will learn about the ecological restoration project taking place at this particular site and hear from one of the biologists involved. \nThis critical marshland ecosystem contains a variety of unique and endangered species such as the salt marsh harvest mouse (can drink salt water) and the Ridgway’s Rail (listed as endangered since 1970) as well as a rare taste of expansive solitude in the middle of the San Francisco Bay Area. The place we will be visiting has historically provided one of the biggest overwintering sites for canvasback ducks and numerous other waterbirds should be arriving when we visit in the fall. We will focus on drawing and learning about tidal marshland plants and animals and practice landscapitos. How can we use our journals to capture the essence of the place and convey some of the fascinating ecological significance of this region? \nWe will begin the day early and watch as the low tide comes in and the composition of waterfowl changes in this awesome avian habitat. \nBe prepared for sun and increasing wind as the day progresses\, windbreakers\, clips for your pages\, and a hat that can handle wind are mandatory! Walking distances will be short on even paths that are mostly flat. Scooter accessible! If you want to get up close and personal with some of the marshland plants and invertebrates wear rain boots or go barefoot for the mud. Bring a folding stool if you like but there are also benches. Binoculars and scope would be very helpful. Bring a potluck item to share on the trail and utensils for yourself. \nWe will meet at 9 am at the Sear’s Point Trailhead parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion starts and ends earlier than our usual meetup to take advantage of the tide. 9am-1pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Class at Pepperwood Preserve
DESCRIPTION:I’m excited to be doing my first collaboration with the Pepperwood Preserve this year! On August 24th I will be teaching “Seeing More Through Nature Journaling” at their incredible 3\,200 acre property. I went to a reptile walk there a couple months ago so I could nature journal and scope the place out. The vistas were impressive and fun to draw and I got in quick sketches of a blue-tailed skink\, a pileated woodpecker\, and a scorpion! \nThere are only a few people signed up for the class right now and if more don’t sign up we might have to cancel. If you know anyone who is interested please share with them. \nThe class is from 9am until 2pm. Bring nature journaling supplies such as sketchbook\, pencil\, watercolors if you have them and a backback or shoulder bag to carry them. Binoculars and small folding stools could also be useful. Be prepared for sun and heat by wearing a hat\, applying sunscreen and bringing water. We will be walking less than a mile on relatively even hiking trails with some hills.Bring a lunch to eat on the trail. \nFor more information or to register click here \n

SUMMARY:Scope Out Shollenberger Wetlands!
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will scope out the marshes of Shollenberger park near Petaluma. This convenient park provides ample opportunities to sketch water birds and learn about California’s coastal wetlands\, the most endangered of all our ecosystem types! The Audobon Society and local docents report 225 species of birds! There will also be expansive views of the long extinct volcano that is Sonoma mountain. We will focus on drawing and learning about the plants and birds that inhabit this area and we will also practice composing and executing small landscapes showcasing Sonoma mountain in the background. \nMeet at the parking lot at 9:00. Earlier than our normal time! We are meeting earlier to beat the heat a little bit. \nThe address below might only get you to the intersection of Cader ln if you are following a GPS. From South Mcdowell blvd you will turn onto Cader lane/ Schollenberger park rd and continue to the parking lot. It could be a warm sunny day and we will be out in the open so plan accordingly. Sun hats\, sunscreen\, lots of water. The walk is very gentle\, flat\, and wheelchair and scooter accessible on a paved route. We will return to the parking lot before the potluck so you can keep bulkier food and beverage items in your car. Bring a light folding stool if you have one\, we will do some more extended landscape and plant paintings at this location. \nAs usual be prepared to get super-curious in nature and connect with like minded people! Bring a potluck item to share for lunch around 12:30. \nSuggested donation $20

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Full Bloom!
DESCRIPTION:In April\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will have the special opportunity to spend the day in a flower-filled apple orchard. We will enjoy the beauty of the blossoms\, practice drawing the 100 year old trees\, and learn about the endangered Gravenstein apple and how biodiversity is connected to our food system. We will also have a good opportunity to learn about the pollinators and other animals that call these orchards home. \nFor the lesson portion of the field trip we will talk about techniques for drawing trees and tricks for depicting numerous repeating patterns such as flowers or leaves. We will also discuss how to divide space on your page to create a better composition. As usual\, we will practice intentional curiosity\, visual thinking\, and careful observation in a supportive community setting. \nWe will not be hiking long distances on this trip but the ground will be uneven. Wear layered clothing and be prepared for either sun and warmth or cool breezy conditions. Scooters or wheelchairs can be accommodated at this location. \nThis wonderful opportunity is made possible by our nature journaling friend Carole who has offered us the use of her orchard for this event. Please be respectful while we are on the property. Carole has been kind enough to allow us to use her bathroom while we are there. \nWe will enjoy a very scenic Potluck lunch around 12:30. We won’t need to hike with our food because we will be eating near the cars. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Dramatic Seascapes\, Birds and Seals!
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE (7:20pm Saturday Night) Looks like a 35% chance of rain during the meetup. I’m still going and will be sketching and nature journaling. Probably will be a small group so bring your own lunch just in case there is not a cornucopia of a potluck 🙂 \nIn April\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will head to the exciting coastal formation of Goat Rock at the mouth of the Russian River! We will learn about the recently flooded Russian River Watershed while capturing the drama of the waves\, ocean cliffs\, and swollen river. We will also have a good opportunity to see shorebirds\, osprey\, the resident colony of harbor seals and even bald eagles! \nFor the lesson portion of the field trip we will talk about techniques for depicting seascapes and hints for getting the essence of a place in a shorter amount of time. We will also discuss how to put together a nature journaling kit that works well in the field. As usual\, we will practice intentional curiosity\, visual thinking\, and careful observation in a supportive community setting. \nWe will not be hiking long distances from the parking lot on this trip but the ground will be uneven and sandy. Wear layered clothing and be prepared for sun and cold wind. Unfortunately\, this location is not wheelchair or scooter friendly. \nWe will enjoy a Potluck lunch around 12:30. We won’t need to hike with our food because we will be eating near the cars. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds. \nWe will park at the last parking lot at the bottom of the hill to the left of the pin on the google map. It is the northernmost parking lot on the map.  There are bathrooms and the parking is free. \nRAIN PLAN: check this page the night before the trip in case of rain in forecast we will cancel.

SUMMARY:Marvel at Incredible Carnivorous Plants!
DESCRIPTION:In the month of January\, the North Coast Nature Journal club will stay out of the rain and warm inside the bio-diverse greenhouses at California Carnivores in Sebastopol! This local business contains arguably the biggest collection of carnivorous plants in the world. Not only are these plants fascinating to study and beautiful to draw but many of them are also endangered. They also have many orchids\, bromeliads\, etc. \nTopics covered will include: how to quickly capture the essence of complex shapes in our drawings\, how to draw things we are afraid of\, and how to nature journal in visually overwhelming or information-dense settings. \nThe weather will be relatively mild\, humid\, and probably warmish inside the greenhouses. Hats will be useful if it is sunny. We will not be walking much but the floor is uneven and made of gravel. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Potluck lunch around 12:30. \nBe prepared for mind-boggling plant forms and colors as well as a good dose of novelty-induced dopamine! \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Second Chance Elk Rut!
DESCRIPTION:  \nEVENT CANCELLED due to likelihood of smoke!!! \nIf you want some nature journaling home study inspiration or exercises for this weekend please email me: marley339@gmail.com. I will also probably post a video with some inspiration for indoor nature journaling. \n  \nIn November we will hike back out to Tomales Point for a second chance or a double dose of the Tule Elk!  There should still be some of the mating season behavior at this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. Last year we ended up witnessing some amazing coyote activity on the second chance elk trip and we also encountered  humans who thought it was a wolf! We did our best to spread accurate information about the distinctions between wolves and coyotes and the political importance of this difference. Thanks to Constance\, and the California Center for natural History for participating in this field trip last year and providing an awesome spotting scope that helped us see the wolf\, I mean coyote\, up close. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the McCLure’s Beach trailhead parking lot at the very end of Pierce Point past the parking lot with the old white barns. McClures Beach Trail\, Inverness\, CA 94937\, United States. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \nRAINY DAY BACKUP PLAN: If lots of rain is in the forecast\, check this site the morning of the event. We will go to the Bear Valley Visitor center in Point Reyes where we can sketch birds and landscapitos from the covered porch or sketch any of the fine collection of taxidermied animals inside. Last time I was there during a rain I saw and journaled a sharp shinned hawk hunting a song bird in the bushes just yards away! The address is 1 Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road\, Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nBe prepared for Nature Journaling goosebumps and a good dose of charismatic mammalian megafauna! \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.
