SUMMARY:Pitcher Plant Bonanza!
DESCRIPTION:In June\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club is privileged to enjoy the peak of the pitcher plants at California Carnivores in Sonoma County! This nursery contains the largest collection of carnivorous plants in the world and June will be a perfect time to see the amazing species of pitcher plants at their best! If you think you have already nature journaled once at this location and don’t need to go twice – think again.  We will focus on drawing and learning about carnivorous plants in general and Sarracenia pitcher plants in particular. We will also practice composition strategies and tips for nature journaling in information dense environments. \nThe weather will be relatively mild and probably comfortable inside the greenhouses. Hats will be useful if it is sunny. We will not be walking much but the floor is uneven and made of gravel\, scooters or wheelchairs can be accommodated. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Bring a potluck item to share for lunch around 12:30. You can leave food in your car. \n$20 suggested donation. \nThis class is limited to 12 people. Please email me to reserve your spot. \nAs usual be prepared to get super-curious in nature and connect with like minded people! \nHere is a picture of Akshay nature journaling surrounded by pitchers last year!

SUMMARY:Scope Out Shollenberger Wetlands!
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will scope out the marshes of Shollenberger park near Petaluma. This convenient park provides ample opportunities to sketch water birds and learn about California’s coastal wetlands\, the most endangered of all our ecosystem types! The Audobon Society and local docents report 225 species of birds! There will also be expansive views of the long extinct volcano that is Sonoma mountain. We will focus on drawing and learning about the plants and birds that inhabit this area and we will also practice composing and executing small landscapes showcasing Sonoma mountain in the background. \nMeet at the parking lot at 9:00. Earlier than our normal time! We are meeting earlier to beat the heat a little bit. \nThe address below might only get you to the intersection of Cader ln if you are following a GPS. From South Mcdowell blvd you will turn onto Cader lane/ Schollenberger park rd and continue to the parking lot. It could be a warm sunny day and we will be out in the open so plan accordingly. Sun hats\, sunscreen\, lots of water. The walk is very gentle\, flat\, and wheelchair and scooter accessible on a paved route. We will return to the parking lot before the potluck so you can keep bulkier food and beverage items in your car. Bring a light folding stool if you have one\, we will do some more extended landscape and plant paintings at this location. \nAs usual be prepared to get super-curious in nature and connect with like minded people! Bring a potluck item to share for lunch around 12:30. \nSuggested donation $20

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Full Bloom!
DESCRIPTION:In April\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will have the special opportunity to spend the day in a flower-filled apple orchard. We will enjoy the beauty of the blossoms\, practice drawing the 100 year old trees\, and learn about the endangered Gravenstein apple and how biodiversity is connected to our food system. We will also have a good opportunity to learn about the pollinators and other animals that call these orchards home. \nFor the lesson portion of the field trip we will talk about techniques for drawing trees and tricks for depicting numerous repeating patterns such as flowers or leaves. We will also discuss how to divide space on your page to create a better composition. As usual\, we will practice intentional curiosity\, visual thinking\, and careful observation in a supportive community setting. \nWe will not be hiking long distances on this trip but the ground will be uneven. Wear layered clothing and be prepared for either sun and warmth or cool breezy conditions. Scooters or wheelchairs can be accommodated at this location. \nThis wonderful opportunity is made possible by our nature journaling friend Carole who has offered us the use of her orchard for this event. Please be respectful while we are on the property. Carole has been kind enough to allow us to use her bathroom while we are there. \nWe will enjoy a very scenic Potluck lunch around 12:30. We won’t need to hike with our food because we will be eating near the cars. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Dramatic Seascapes\, Birds and Seals!
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE (7:20pm Saturday Night) Looks like a 35% chance of rain during the meetup. I’m still going and will be sketching and nature journaling. Probably will be a small group so bring your own lunch just in case there is not a cornucopia of a potluck 🙂 \nIn April\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will head to the exciting coastal formation of Goat Rock at the mouth of the Russian River! We will learn about the recently flooded Russian River Watershed while capturing the drama of the waves\, ocean cliffs\, and swollen river. We will also have a good opportunity to see shorebirds\, osprey\, the resident colony of harbor seals and even bald eagles! \nFor the lesson portion of the field trip we will talk about techniques for depicting seascapes and hints for getting the essence of a place in a shorter amount of time. We will also discuss how to put together a nature journaling kit that works well in the field. As usual\, we will practice intentional curiosity\, visual thinking\, and careful observation in a supportive community setting. \nWe will not be hiking long distances from the parking lot on this trip but the ground will be uneven and sandy. Wear layered clothing and be prepared for sun and cold wind. Unfortunately\, this location is not wheelchair or scooter friendly. \nWe will enjoy a Potluck lunch around 12:30. We won’t need to hike with our food because we will be eating near the cars. \n$20 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds. \nWe will park at the last parking lot at the bottom of the hill to the left of the pin on the google map. It is the northernmost parking lot on the map.  There are bathrooms and the parking is free. \nRAIN PLAN: check this page the night before the trip in case of rain in forecast we will cancel.

SUMMARY:Marvel at Incredible Carnivorous Plants!
DESCRIPTION:In the month of January\, the North Coast Nature Journal club will stay out of the rain and warm inside the bio-diverse greenhouses at California Carnivores in Sebastopol! This local business contains arguably the biggest collection of carnivorous plants in the world. Not only are these plants fascinating to study and beautiful to draw but many of them are also endangered. They also have many orchids\, bromeliads\, etc. \nTopics covered will include: how to quickly capture the essence of complex shapes in our drawings\, how to draw things we are afraid of\, and how to nature journal in visually overwhelming or information-dense settings. \nThe weather will be relatively mild\, humid\, and probably warmish inside the greenhouses. Hats will be useful if it is sunny. We will not be walking much but the floor is uneven and made of gravel. Wear comfortable shoes\, bring a folding stool if you have one\, a potluck item to share\, utensils for yourself and water to drink. There is a bathroom on site. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking lot. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks.  Potluck lunch around 12:30. \nBe prepared for mind-boggling plant forms and colors as well as a good dose of novelty-induced dopamine! \n$20 suggested donation. SUMMARY:Second Chance Elk Rut!
DESCRIPTION:  \nEVENT CANCELLED due to likelihood of smoke!!! \nIf you want some nature journaling home study inspiration or exercises for this weekend please email me: marley339@gmail.com. I will also probably post a video with some inspiration for indoor nature journaling. \n  \nIn November we will hike back out to Tomales Point for a second chance or a double dose of the Tule Elk!  There should still be some of the mating season behavior at this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. Last year we ended up witnessing some amazing coyote activity on the second chance elk trip and we also encountered  humans who thought it was a wolf! We did our best to spread accurate information about the distinctions between wolves and coyotes and the political importance of this difference. Thanks to Constance\, and the California Center for natural History for participating in this field trip last year and providing an awesome spotting scope that helped us see the wolf\, I mean coyote\, up close. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the McCLure’s Beach trailhead parking lot at the very end of Pierce Point past the parking lot with the old white barns. McClures Beach Trail\, Inverness\, CA 94937\, United States. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \nRAINY DAY BACKUP PLAN: If lots of rain is in the forecast\, check this site the morning of the event. We will go to the Bear Valley Visitor center in Point Reyes where we can sketch birds and landscapitos from the covered porch or sketch any of the fine collection of taxidermied animals inside. Last time I was there during a rain I saw and journaled a sharp shinned hawk hunting a song bird in the bushes just yards away! The address is 1 Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road\, Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nBe prepared for Nature Journaling goosebumps and a good dose of charismatic mammalian megafauna! \n$20 suggested donation. SUMMARY:Capture the Essence of California Oak Savanna
DESCRIPTION:In the month of October the north coast nature journal club will be exploring the rolling hills and oak savanna of Helen Putnam Regional Park near Petaluma. We will practice several techniques for doing small watercolor landscapes to capture the essence and atmosphere of the place. We will also practice drawing three-dimensional trees with several tricks that will make your branches look like they’re coming off the page. \nWe will be hiking short distances up and down hill on this trip with mostly even terrain. Bring all your normal nature journaling supplies and binoculars. Be prepared for sun and warm conditions. A small folding stool could be useful for the longer landscape drawing. This location has a bathroom and seven dollar parking unless you are a member of the Sonoma County Regional Parks. Bring a potluck item that is not too hard to carry onto the trail because we will not want to go back to the parking lot for lunch. \n$20 recommended donation \nFor more information about this park: Helen-Putnam-Regional-Park \n \nIn case of heavy rain\, unlikely\, we will head to California Carnivores in Sebastopol where we can journal and draw incredible carnivorous plants while being protected from the rain..  Directions

SUMMARY:Enjoy the Beauty of Bodega Head!
DESCRIPTION:In August\, we will escape the heat and head to the  majestic coastal bluffs of Bodega Head! This is a great place to learn about the local geology that underlies our region. It is also a great place to practice the rock drawing skills that we learned in June at Shorttail Gulch. There are some impressive old cypress trees where we will practice several brush stroke techniques. If you have one make sure to bring one of those Pentel ink  brush pens. The whole time we will keep our eyes open for bird activity and whales which are both observed from this location. \nThere will be a minimum amount of hiking on unpaved but mostly flat trails. Bring everything you need to be comfortable and protected from sun and wind. A wide-brimmed hat\, sunscreen\, and lots of water are essential. A small folding stool could also be useful. Binoculars will be useful as will bulldog clips for keeping your journal pages from fluttering if it is windy. \nWe will have our potluck near the parking lot so your food item does not need to be portable. There is a bathroom but no water. \nWe are meeting at 9am instead of 10 because we are on our summer schedule. \n$20 recommended donation \nThe last stretch of the drive is curvy but just keep following Westshore Road and you will reach a large parking lot. \n \n

SUMMARY:Low Tide Adventure at Shorttail Gulch!
DESCRIPTION:In July\, we will hike a little-known trail through prime owl habitat down to a beautiful cove with shorebirds and tidal rocks! There are also great wildflowers\, raptors\, and hummingbirds along the way. This is one of my favorite new spots to nature journal in all of the North Bay. We will be there during a relatively low tide so that we can apply our journaling practice towards the fascinating web of life that exists where the waves meet the land! We will start with some exercises to help our ability to draw rocks and landscapes. The tide will be going down and be at its lowest around 1pm. Some people may stay longer if the tide-pooling is super fun! \nThere will be a moderate amount of hiking on steep trail with lots of stairs to get down to the beach. If you are not that sure on your feet or have trouble with lots of stairs this might not be the trip for you. Once at the beach we won’t walk too far but be prepared for sand and or slippery rocks.  Bring everything you need to be comfortable and protected from sun and wind. This would be a good day to test out your sunny-day nature journaling equipment! A wide-brimmed hat\, sunscreen\, maybe even an umbrella. Also be prepared for wind. A small folding stool could also be useful. Close focus binoculars and maybe a magnifying glass could be useful for looking at tide pool creatures. \nWe will have our potluck lunch on the beach so bring something that is somewhat portable. \n$20 recommended donation \nThe trail head is located within a residential community in Bodega Bay so please be respectful when parking along Osprey Dr. The trailhead will be on your left as you drive in. The map below should get you to the right spot. There is no bathroom or water. \n

SUMMARY:Survey Salmon Creek Beach!
DESCRIPTION:In June\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will head to one of my favorite spots\, South Salmon Creek Beach! This is a very fun location to observe coastal sand dunes\, wetlands\, waterbirds\, and to explore animal tracks including a resident family of red foxes! \nWe won’t hike long distances but the terrain is slightly challenging because it is mostly sand dunes. The weather is variable and can be windy. Be prepared for sun\, sand\, and wind. Bring sketching and watercolor supplies\, binoculars\, and a potluck lunch to share. We will return to the parking lot around 12:30 for the potluck so you don’t need to pack your food/beverages on this trip. If you came here with us on a previous outing please bring your nature journal from that trip for an illuminating comparison. \nWe will meet in the parking lot at 9am. Please note this is earlier than usual.  We will be on an early schedule for June\, July\, and August to take advantage of the nicer time of day. Parking at this location is free. \nDirections: Drive north on Hwy 1 from Bodega Bay\, after the big sign and turnoff for Bodega Dunes Campground stay attentive on the left. Just before the bridge over the creek there is a small turnoff onto Bean ave. Turn left onto Bean ave and follow this small street until it dead ends at a parking lot covered in sand. \nOr look at this map:

SUMMARY:Tracking Animal Sign and Bird Language at the Laguna!
DESCRIPTION:I love the Laguna de Santa Rosa in Sonoma County\, and on June third I get to teach tracking and bird language there with the Laguna Foundation. My all time record for most species of raptors I have seen in one hour happened there! Because of the riparian areas there is also a large diversity of interesting mammals to track. \nIn this workshop you will learn how a tracking perspective can help you learn more\, see more\, and have more fun in any natural environment. \nTo sign up and read more check out the event page here

SUMMARY:Discover Sonoma Mountain!
DESCRIPTION:In the month of May\, the North Coast Nature Journal club will be heading into the beautiful wooded hills east of Santa Rosa with our sketchbooks and watercolors as well as our observation skills and our learning intentions. This site is incredibly gorgeous this time of year\, with verdant oaks\,  lofty redwoods\, dramatic creekbeds and waterfalls\, and some incredible views of Sonoma County. We will go over several observation techniques that are useful with these particular subjects and do some landscapes. \n \nWe will be hiking short distances up and down hill on this trip with some uneven ground and rocky terrain. \n$20 recommended donation \nFor more about the park\, including directions: https://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Visit/North-Sonoma-Mountain-Regional-Park-and-Preserve/ \nOr look at this map: \n

SUMMARY:Sketch and Journal at Shell Beach!
DESCRIPTION:In the month of April\, the North Coast Nature Journal club will be heading back to the beautiful ocean with our sketchbooks and watercolors as well as our observation skills and our learning intentions. This site will provide a perfect opportunity for practicing the drawing of compelling landscape scenes including rocks\, water\, and coastal bluffs. We will go over several techniques specifically designed to help you portray these subjects with line work or in watercolor. There is also a secret nature journaling activity designed by John Muir Laws that we will try out at the beach. It has been especially created to hone our observation skills. \nWe will not be hiking long distances but the trail will be uneven down to the beach and we will be walking on some on sand. Be prepared for sun and for wind. A small folding stool could be useful. This location has a bathroom and free parking. Bring a potluck item that is not too hard to carry onto the trail because we will not want to go back to the parking lot for lunch. Picnic on the beach! \n$20 recommended donation \nUse this map to find us! We will be in the Kortum Trail parking lot standing around with sketchbooks and binoculars. I can’t wait to see you there!!

SUMMARY:Discover the Grove of Old Redwoods
DESCRIPTION:For the month of March\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be discovering the grove of old redwood trees in Occidental! \nI am  excited about the journaling opportunities at this forested location. We will focus on techniques for drawing ferns\, trees\, and simplifying bark patterns. We will also be on the lookout for interesting amphibians that may be living in the redwood duff and birds that might visit. \nWe won’t cover much distance and we will probably have long stationary moments close to the parking lot. The ground is fairly flat. The weather looks like it will be ok and the location is protected. But it will probably be cool and shady. A foldable lightweight stool and binoculars will be very handy on this trip. Bring plenty of water and we will have potluck lunch near the parking lot. \nMeet at the parking lot. You will see people standing around with sketchbooks and binoculars. \nDirections: \n17400 Fitzpatrick Lane\, Occidental\, CA. From the town of Occidental\, look for Coleman Valley Road – the main road exiting the West Side of town. Take Coleman Valley Road up the hill for approximately 2 miles until it turns into Joy Road (where Coleman Valley turns right). Continue straight on Joy Road. Take Joy Road for approximately 0.2 miles and then turn right on Fitzpatrick Lane.Proceed slowly on this narrow winding lane for approximately 1.4 miles.  The road banks to the left over a cattle grate\, and up a moderately steep hill. Please remember to give right of way to vehicles traveling uphill. Continue around the bend and to the gravel parking area on your right. \nFor more information see: http://landpaths.org/propertyexplorer/grove-of-old-trees.aspx \n$20 recommended donation

SUMMARY:Capture the Beauty of Bodega Head!
DESCRIPTION:For the month of February\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be heading out to Bodega Head in Sonoma County! \nI am really excited about the opportunities that this spot will provide. We will focus on techniques for drawing and painting quick landscapes and how to crop and choose a good composition.  There are many beautiful coves\, rock formations\, and charismatic trees to draw. While we are working on these\, there will probably be cool bird sightings mixed in\, and maybe even whales. last time I was out there I saw a burrowing owl! \nWe won’t cover much distance and we will probably have long stationary moments close to the parking lot. The ground is uneven however\, and could be slippery in places.  The weather is unpredictable and can get cool and windy but the weather forecast looks like it could be quite nice and warm. A foldable lightweight stool and binoculars will be very handy on this trip\, as will a sun hat and other sun protection. SUMMARY:Explore Sunset at the Laguna!
DESCRIPTION:In December we will meet at the Laguna de Santa Rosa trail during the most exciting and most beautiful time of day! The crepuscular hours are when many raptors can be seen hunting and many mammals are out in the open. Every time I walk this trail near sunset I’m surprised by how many birds I see and by the incredibly lit landscapes. Last time\, I saw a family of owls! \nWe will focus on techniques for drawing and painting quick landscapes and how to crop and choose a good composition. We will also work a lot on colors and light as the sun drops. While we are working on these\, there will probably be cool bird sightings mixed in. \nThis trail is a very easy hike on flat and mostly paved paths. It is wheelchair accessible. We won’t cover much distance and we will probably have long stationary moments. The weather is unpredictable and can get cool as the sun drops. Bring a packable snack item to share because we will eat on the trail. A foldable lightweight stool and binoculars will be very handy on this trip. \nFor this trip we will meet later than usual at 1:30pm until 5:00pm to allow us to be out in nature at a special time of day. Our potluck will therefore be more of a “Linner” than a lunch. Meet at the Laguna de Santa Rosa trail parking lot off of Hwy 12 just before the entrance to Sebastopol. There is no address or street name but it is the next turnout after this  Saddle Shop: 6144 Sebastopol Ave\, Sebastopol\, CA 95472 and before the Chevron. \nIf it is raining hard the morning of the event we will meet at our backup location\, California Carnivores\, and draw the incredible plants inside their wonderful greenhouses! The address is: \nCalifornia Carnivores 2833 Old Gravenstein Hwy Sebastopol\, CA 95472 \nFor more information about this incredible carnivorous plant resource in South Sebastopol check out their page: https://www.californiacarnivores.com/ \n$20 recommended donation

SUMMARY:Second Chance Elk at Tomales Point!
DESCRIPTION:In November we will hike back out to Tomales Point for a second chance or a double dose of the Tule Elk! We went once in September and it was awesome! There should still be some of the mating season behavior at this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. We will focus on learning how to draw ungulates\, how to draw antlers\, and how to creatively depict action sequences in your journal. There will also be plenty of opportunity for painting landscapitos. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the Tomales Point trailhead parking lot at the very end of Pierce Point road near the old white barns. \n$20 suggested donation

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Field Trip to Sacramento Valley
DESCRIPTION:On June fourth I will be participating in the Bay Area Nature Journal Club field trip with Jack Laws! I’m always excited to go Nature Journaling with Jack. Last time I went with him we saw four peregrine falcons including a dramatic hunt and kill. \nFor this month the trip will be to the Sacramento Valley Rice Country for some exciting bird action! \nThe rice farmers of the Sacramento Valley have worked closely with bird conservation groups to maximize the wildlife potential of the fields. In springtime and early summer rice fields are thriving bird nurseries. The Nature Journal Club will be the guests of the California Rice Commission for a rare behind the scenes tour of Sacramento Valley rice farms. We will search for nesting birds and learn about bird friendly agricultural techniques. \nThe program is open to all ages and ability levels. No registration necessary. $20 suggested donation. \n\nLink to Jack’s website

SUMMARY:Delve Deeper at Bodega Dunes
DESCRIPTION:In the month of May the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be going to one of my favorite locations\, Bodega Dunes! This is another great spot to learn the usefulness of a tracking perspective and how reading tracks can accelerate your learning as a naturalist and nature journaler. We will also get a chance to explore the edges of seasonal ponds\, coastal wildflowers\, the digs of coyotes and badgers\, and perhaps osprey and other raptor activity. Last time I was there I found huge owl pellets filled with vole bones\, watched osprey fly by with fish\, and saw hundreds of sandpipers on the beach. \nThis is a coastal location so the weather is variable and often windy. Sometimes it is foggy and drippy. Wear layers and sun protection\, sun hat. The hiking will be mild and we will mostly avoid walking on the difficult loose sand dunes. Our potluck will be around 12:30 on the trail so bring a packable potluck item to share. Binoculars and light folding stools could be useful. \nWe will park and meet at 10am along the cypress trees at the entrance. Parking in this area is free. \nBe prepared to recognize patterns\, draw birds\, and add story-telling elements to your journal practice. Students from my Santa Rosa Junior College class might join us on this day! \n$20 suggested donation \n
