SUMMARY:Capture the Essence of California Oak Savanna
DESCRIPTION:In the month of October the north coast nature journal club will be exploring the rolling hills and oak savanna of Helen Putnam Regional Park near Petaluma. We will practice several techniques for doing small watercolor landscapes to capture the essence and atmosphere of the place. We will also practice drawing three-dimensional trees with several tricks that will make your branches look like they’re coming off the page. \nWe will be hiking short distances up and down hill on this trip with mostly even terrain. Bring all your normal nature journaling supplies and binoculars. Be prepared for sun and warm conditions. A small folding stool could be useful for the longer landscape drawing. This location has a bathroom and seven dollar parking unless you are a member of the Sonoma County Regional Parks. SUMMARY:Draw Majestic Elk and Epic Landscapes!
DESCRIPTION:In September we will hike out on Tomales Point in Marin County to see the elk herds during their rut and enjoy the overall epic scenes! The Tule elk will be on their most dramatic behavior this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. Last year it was great! We will focus on learning how to draw ungulates\, how to draw antlers\, and how to creatively depict action sequences in your journal. There will also be plenty of opportunity for painting landscapitos. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. \nWe are back on our normal schedule so we will meet at 10 am at the Tomales Point trailhead parking lot at the very end of pierce point road near the old white barns. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \nBe prepared for Nature Journaling goosebumps and a good dose of charismatic mammalian megafauna! \n$20 suggested donation. SUMMARY:Enjoy the Beauty of Bodega Head!
DESCRIPTION:In August\, we will escape the heat and head to the  majestic coastal bluffs of Bodega Head! This is a great place to learn about the local geology that underlies our region. It is also a great place to practice the rock drawing skills that we learned in June at Shorttail Gulch. There are some impressive old cypress trees where we will practice several brush stroke techniques. If you have one make sure to bring one of those Pentel ink  brush pens. The whole time we will keep our eyes open for bird activity and whales which are both observed from this location. \nThere will be a minimum amount of hiking on unpaved but mostly flat trails. Bring everything you need to be comfortable and protected from sun and wind. A wide-brimmed hat\, sunscreen\, and lots of water are essential. A small folding stool could also be useful. Binoculars will be useful as will bulldog clips for keeping your journal pages from fluttering if it is windy. \nWe will have our potluck near the parking lot so your food item does not need to be portable. There is a bathroom but no water. \nWe are meeting at 9am instead of 10 because we are on our summer schedule. \n$20 recommended donation \nThe last stretch of the drive is curvy but just keep following Westshore Road and you will reach a large parking lot. \n \n

SUMMARY:Low Tide Adventure at Shorttail Gulch!
DESCRIPTION:In July\, we will hike a little-known trail through prime owl habitat down to a beautiful cove with shorebirds and tidal rocks! There are also great wildflowers\, raptors\, and hummingbirds along the way. This is one of my favorite new spots to nature journal in all of the North Bay. We will be there during a relatively low tide so that we can apply our journaling practice towards the fascinating web of life that exists where the waves meet the land! We will start with some exercises to help our ability to draw rocks and landscapes. The tide will be going down and be at its lowest around 1pm. Some people may stay longer if the tide-pooling is super fun! \nThere will be a moderate amount of hiking on steep trail with lots of stairs to get down to the beach. If you are not that sure on your feet or have trouble with lots of stairs this might not be the trip for you. Once at the beach we won’t walk too far but be prepared for sand and or slippery rocks.  Bring everything you need to be comfortable and protected from sun and wind. This would be a good day to test out your sunny-day nature journaling equipment! A wide-brimmed hat\, sunscreen\, maybe even an umbrella. Also be prepared for wind. A small folding stool could also be useful. Close focus binoculars and maybe a magnifying glass could be useful for looking at tide pool creatures. \nWe will have our potluck lunch on the beach so bring something that is somewhat portable. \n$20 recommended donation \nThe trail head is located within a residential community in Bodega Bay so please be respectful when parking along Osprey Dr. The trailhead will be on your left as you drive in. SUMMARY:Survey Salmon Creek Beach!
DESCRIPTION:In June\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will head to one of my favorite spots\, South Salmon Creek Beach! This is a very fun location to observe coastal sand dunes\, wetlands\, waterbirds\, and to explore animal tracks including a resident family of red foxes! \nWe won’t hike long distances but the terrain is slightly challenging because it is mostly sand dunes. The weather is variable and can be windy. Be prepared for sun\, sand\, and wind. Bring sketching and watercolor supplies\, binoculars\, and a potluck lunch to share. We will return to the parking lot around 12:30 for the potluck so you don’t need to pack your food/beverages on this trip. If you came here with us on a previous outing please bring your nature journal from that trip for an illuminating comparison. \nWe will meet in the parking lot at 9am. Please note this is earlier than usual.  We will be on an early schedule for June\, July\, and August to take advantage of the nicer time of day. DESCRIPTION:In the month of April\, the North Coast Nature Journal club will be heading back to the beautiful ocean with our sketchbooks and watercolors as well as our observation skills and our learning intentions. This site will provide a perfect opportunity for practicing the drawing of compelling landscape scenes including rocks\, water\, and coastal bluffs. We will go over several techniques specifically designed to help you portray these subjects with line work or in watercolor. There is also a secret nature journaling activity designed by John Muir Laws that we will try out at the beach. It has been especially created to hone our observation skills. \nWe will not be hiking long distances but the trail will be uneven down to the beach and we will be walking on some on sand. Be prepared for sun and for wind. A small folding stool could be useful. This location has a bathroom and free parking. Bring a potluck item that is not too hard to carry onto the trail because we will not want to go back to the parking lot for lunch. SUMMARY:Discover the Grove of Old Redwoods
DESCRIPTION:For the month of March\, the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be discovering the grove of old redwood trees in Occidental! \nI am  excited about the journaling opportunities at this forested location. We will focus on techniques for drawing ferns\, trees\, and simplifying bark patterns. We will also be on the lookout for interesting amphibians that may be living in the redwood duff and birds that might visit. \nWe won’t cover much distance and we will probably have long stationary moments close to the parking lot. The ground is fairly flat. The weather looks like it will be ok and the location is protected. But it will probably be cool and shady. A foldable lightweight stool and binoculars will be very handy on this trip. Bring plenty of water and we will have potluck lunch near the parking lot. \nMeet at the parking lot. You will see people standing around with sketchbooks and binoculars. \nDirections: \n17400 Fitzpatrick Lane\, Occidental\, CA. From the town of Occidental\, look for Coleman Valley Road – the main road exiting the West Side of town. Take Coleman Valley Road up the hill for approximately 2 miles until it turns into Joy Road (where Coleman Valley turns right). Continue straight on Joy Road. Take Joy Road for approximately 0.2 miles and then turn right on Fitzpatrick Lane.Proceed slowly on this narrow winding lane for approximately 1.4 miles.  The road banks to the left over a cattle grate\, and up a moderately steep hill. SUMMARY:Explore Sunset at the Laguna!
DESCRIPTION:In December we will meet at the Laguna de Santa Rosa trail during the most exciting and most beautiful time of day! The crepuscular hours are when many raptors can be seen hunting and many mammals are out in the open. Every time I walk this trail near sunset I’m surprised by how many birds I see and by the incredibly lit landscapes. Last time\, I saw a family of owls! \nWe will focus on techniques for drawing and painting quick landscapes and how to crop and choose a good composition. We will also work a lot on colors and light as the sun drops. While we are working on these\, there will probably be cool bird sightings mixed in. \nThis trail is a very easy hike on flat and mostly paved paths. It is wheelchair accessible. We won’t cover much distance and we will probably have long stationary moments. The weather is unpredictable and can get cool as the sun drops. Bring a packable snack item to share because we will eat on the trail. A foldable lightweight stool and binoculars will be very handy on this trip. \nFor this trip we will meet later than usual at 1:30pm until 5:00pm to allow us to be out in nature at a special time of day. Our potluck will therefore be more of a “Linner” than a lunch. Meet at the Laguna de Santa Rosa trail parking lot off of Hwy 12 just before the entrance to Sebastopol. DESCRIPTION:On October 22nd I will be geeking out with my nature journal at the reptile expo in Santa Rosa at the fairgrounds!! It will be a great opportunity to see a diversity of willing models from around the world. As you might know I am passionate about sketching snakes and really look forward to drawing some of the endlessly fascinating color patterns on their skins. \nLook for parking at the Veterans hall across the street. 1351 Maple Ave\, Santa Rosa\, CA 95404. There will be paid parking available also closer to the entrance to the fairgrounds. To get into the expo costs 10$. Journalers and sketchers will meet inside the Hall of Flowers. SUMMARY:Revisit Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:In October\, we will be back to South Salmon Creek Beach to see how it has changed since our last visit in March. This will give us the perfect opportunity to talk about the role of our nature journals in seasonal patterns and changes over time. How are the colors different? How have the animal tracks and behavior changed since our visit in March? \nThis is a very fun location to observe coastal wetlands\, waterbirds\, and to explore animal tracks including red foxes. \nWe won’t hike long distances but the terrain is slightly challenging because it is mostly sand dunes. The weather is variable and can be windy. Be prepared for sand and wind. Bring sketching and watercolor supplies\, binoculars\, and a potluck lunch to share. We will return to the parking lot around 12:30 for the potluck so you don’t need to pack your food/beverages on this trip. If you came here with us in March please bring your nature journal from that trip for an illuminating comparison. \nWe will meet in the parking lot at 10am. Parking here is free. \nDirections: Drive north on Hwy 1 from Bodega Bay\, after the big sign and turnoff for Bodega Dunes Campground stay attentive on the left. Just before the bridge over the creek there is a small turnoff onto Bean ave. Turn left onto Bean ave and follow this small street until it dead ends at a parking lot covered in sand.

SUMMARY:Draw Majestic Elk and Epic Landscapes!
DESCRIPTION:In September we will hike out on Tomales Point to see the elk herds during their rut and enjoy the overall epic scenes! The Tule elk will be on their most dramatic behavior this time of year and we will get an opportunity to document it in our journals. We will focus on learning how to draw ungulates\, how to draw antlers\, and how to creatively depict action sequences in your journal. There will also be plenty of opportunity for painting landscapitos. \nThe weather is variable at this coastal location so be prepared for everything. The hiking will be moderately strenuous due to the distances we will try to cover but the terrain will not be too technical. Wear comfortable hiking shoes\, bring a folding stool\, binoculars\, and a potluck item to share on the trail. \nWe will meet at 10 am at the Tomales Point trailhead parking lot at the very end of pierce point road near the old white barns. Look for people standing around with sketchbooks. This excursion will go longer than our usual meetup to take advantage of this special opportunity. 10am-4pm\, potluck lunch at 12:30. \nBe prepared for Nature Journaling goosebumps and a good dose of charismatic mammalian megafauna! \n$20 suggested donation

DESCRIPTION:On June fourth I will be participating in the Bay Area Nature Journal Club field trip with Jack Laws! I’m always excited to go Nature Journaling with Jack. Last time I went with him we saw four peregrine falcons including a dramatic hunt and kill. \nFor this month the trip will be to the Sacramento Valley Rice Country for some exciting bird action! \nThe rice farmers of the Sacramento Valley have worked closely with bird conservation groups to maximize the wildlife potential of the fields. In springtime and early summer rice fields are thriving bird nurseries. The Nature Journal Club will be the guests of the California Rice Commission for a rare behind the scenes tour of Sacramento Valley rice farms. We will search for nesting birds and learn about bird friendly agricultural techniques. \nThe program is open to all ages and ability levels. SUMMARY:Delve Deeper at Bodega Dunes
DESCRIPTION:In the month of May the North Coast Nature Journal Club will be going to one of my favorite locations\, Bodega Dunes! This is another great spot to learn the usefulness of a tracking perspective and how reading tracks can accelerate your learning as a naturalist and nature journaler. We will also get a chance to explore the edges of seasonal ponds\, coastal wildflowers\, the digs of coyotes and badgers\, and perhaps osprey and other raptor activity. Last time I was there I found huge owl pellets filled with vole bones\, watched osprey fly by with fish\, and saw hundreds of sandpipers on the beach. \nThis is a coastal location so the weather is variable and often windy. Sometimes it is foggy and drippy. Wear layers and sun protection\, sun hat. The hiking will be mild and we will mostly avoid walking on the difficult loose sand dunes. Our potluck will be around 12:30 on the trail so bring a packable potluck item to share. Binoculars and light folding stools could be useful. \nWe will park and meet at 10am along the cypress trees at the entrance. Parking in this area is free. \nBe prepared to recognize patterns\, draw birds\, and add story-telling elements to your journal practice. SUMMARY:"Easter Egg hunt" Hood Mountain!
DESCRIPTION:I plan on going despite some rain in forecast. \nDo you want to go on an “Easter egg hunt” with a bunch of curious and fun nature nerds? What better way to spend part of your Easter? Bring a friend or some family members for a healthy\, outdoorsy\, brain-stimulating way to spend the holiday. The North Coast Nature Journal Club will hike around Hood Mountain regional park\, using our nature journals as a lens for engaging with the natural world. Instead of looking for plastic eggs filled with sugar we will look for precious natural nuggets of wonder that are just waiting to be found by a curious eye. Some dark chocolate might be involved as a cognitive enhancer. There will be great opportunities to compose and paint landscape sketches in the mixed oak woodlands and meadows. Depending on the group we might opt for a more adventurous hike to see some of the North Bay panoramas available from the ridges\, where we can try our hand at painting “grand landscapitos” and study atmospheric perspective. There are also beautiful creeks to explore. \nThis outing will involve more strenuous hiking and areas with very uneven ground. Please wear layers\, sun protection\, and comfortable hiking shoes. Bring a potluck item that can be carried on the trail. Easter themed is fun if you want. As always bring your sketching and watercolor supplies. Light folding stools might be useful but focus on mobility and comfort. \nWe will meet at the Pythian Rd entrance parking lot. Please do not accidentally go to the Los Alamos rd entrance. This is a Sonoma County Regional Park so there is a $7 parking fee. (I recommend becoming a member. Many of our meetings will take place at these parks so a membership could be a good commitment). \n$20 recommended donation
