What is something you usually avoid drawing?
Today’s Prompt: Sketch something you usually avoid
Uh-oh, here we go with another challenging one. That’s because the idea is to grow during a 30 day challenge. Today, we will practice self awareness again. What is something that we avoid nature journaling? Some people only nature journal plants. We might tell ourselves and others that we only nature journal plants because we like plants best. This story can gain complexity and a false sense of credibility over the years. However, if we examine things deeply is it possible that we only nature journal plants because we are afraid of drawing moving animals? Because we don’t think we are good at faces?
Some tips to make this easier
- Use scratch paper if you feel too precious about your nature journal. A sketchbook or a journal should be a place where anything goes: wild ideas, demented doodles, and experimental sketches. Unfortunately, we often get precious with our “books” and start thinking of it as an art piece instead of a tool for growth and learning. If this is what is holding you back then use a scrap paper for today’s exercise.
- Most importantly, you must separate yourself from outcome dependence as much as possible. The goal today is learning and practice. You are developing skills and courage. You are not trying to make a cool picture.
- You can turn it into a blind contour drawing if you need to. This helps you distance yourself from the outcome.
- Don’t show anyone.
- Reward yourself afterwards. Chocolate, red wine, cappuccino, you deserved it!
