The first episode of Season Five was available early for Patreon members. That’s how it works this season. Patreon members get to see the episodes one week early. See the premiere for the general audience on YouTube January 29th at 6pm.
Season five is starting on a high tropical note.
That might be an indicator to where we will be going this year. Be sure to watch the video to see what I find waiting for me up in the tree.
I also did an art supply review while 60 feet off the ground!
However, this is not the first time that a season of the Nature Journal Show has started off in the rainforest canopy. Two years ago I did this canopy access course but in the interim I forgot lots of the details.
It’s important to know what you are doing up there when your whole life can depend on a single knot.
So, I decided to go back to the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can take a class like this and as you might know one of my strategies is to spread nature journaling through science field stations.

Above you can see what one of my mornings looked like before the climbing class started. Time too squeeze in some botanical study, sketchnoting what I’m learning (climbing gear on the right) adding color to field observations from the day before (yes I saw lizards changing colors while having sex, and of course coffee or tea (or both). Do you wonder what the rainforest sounds like in this pre-dawn moment? That is one of the sounds that I captured and shared in mini podcasts for my patreon members that you can see in the list below.
Did you miss the Finale of Season Four?
Check it out here (it’s a great way to see a summary of some of the highlights from the last year).
