Have you ever done an experiment and nature journaled it? Did you now that baking brownies two different ways and doing a side by side test of them can count as an experiment?
Today’s Prompt: Home Experiment
It is easy to fall into a comfortable routine with nature journaling. I go to the same park and draw old trees and make some notes about birds. Over and over again. While that is fine, it is also limiting. Especially if our explicit goal with nature journaling might be learning or cultivating curiosity. Guess what? One great way to cultivate curiosity in your very own home is to do an experiment. While there are kits you can buy for this you can also just make up your own. Once, I did a cratering experiment with some kids that I was teaching nature journaling to. The link below shows a video of the experiment.
nature journaling a home experiment
You can get a description of this experiment at this website. Why is it that all of these home experiment websites are directed at kids? Have adults really stopped experimenting with cool stuff.
Warning: Don’t expect a pretty page
It is important to go into this experiment with the idea that your nature journal is for learning. If you have hidden expectations about creating a pretty page you might be discouraged.
Other Home Experiment Ideas
- Have you always wanted to change one ingredient in a baking recipe and see what would happen? That’s an experiment!
- What would happen if you put a small crumb of blue cheese in a shallow dish of cream and left it in the back of your fridge?
- Have you ever tried freezing different things and seeing what happens?
- What about behavioral experiments on your family? What would happen if you did not cook dinner for them at the usual time?
